ICEYE Enhances Mid-Latitude Imaging with Two New SAR Satellites

January 29, 2025

ICEYE, a provider of satellite-based disaster management solutions, has taken a significant step forward in its Earth Observation capabilities with the launch of two new synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. This latest deployment brings the company’s constellation to an impressive 40 satellites since its inception in 2018, making it their ninth launch in 2024 alone. The new SAR satellites aim to enhance mid-latitude imaging capabilities, providing up to 25 cm imaging capacities. These advancements are particularly beneficial for the insurance and reinsurance sectors, allowing for more precise assessments and management of risks associated with natural disasters like floods and wildfires. By positioning these satellites in mid-inclination orbits, ICEYE has effectively doubled the imaging opportunities in mid-latitude regions, a notable improvement over the traditional polar orbits typically used in satellite imaging.

Bolstering Disaster Management Solutions

The recent launch, part of the Bandwagon-2 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base, underscores ICEYE’s dedication to advancing satellite technology. These newly launched satellites are strategically positioned in mid-latitude orbits, specifically within +/- 45 degrees. This positioning allows for a more diverse and frequent collection of geospatial data compared to traditional satellite orbits, thereby benefiting customers operating within these latitude ranges with richer imaging opportunities.

Rafal Modrzewski, CEO of ICEYE, highlighted that this launch represents a major milestone in enhancing the company’s market-leading Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) constellation. It not only bolsters their capability to gather crucial data but also broadens the spectrum of solutions available to their clients. These advanced imaging capabilities solidify ICEYE’s leadership in delivering invaluable insights for effective disaster management and risk assessment, affirming their standing as an essential player in the sector.
